Outreach Multiplier: Recruitment and Lesson Dissemination

Outcome/Accomplishment

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program is connecting with hundreds of teachers from Title 1 schools and community colleges to provide lessons, hands-on activities, and summer research opportunities at the Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG), an NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) headquartered at Arizona State University.

Impact/Benefits

The NSF RET program provides teachers with the opportunity to engage in a research project at the NSF CBBG and to create a lesson plan for their students based on the experience. The program also provides teachers with science lessons created by the NSF CBBG, improving the accessibility of science and information from the Center to the public.

Explanation/Background

Participants in the program engage hands-on in research activities and are also supported by shared lesson plans. They are provided a curricula website with over 86 lessons and materials. The NSF RET program even allows teachers and NSF CBBG mentors to collaborate on academic publications.

The Center is improving its efforts to expand its lesson deliveries and outreach every year. The Center recruited several summer program participants in 2023 for the NSF RET program. The lessons that participants received in the program served as springboards for two new innovative high school programs that opened in Fall 2023.
