TANMS-ERC Annual Research Strategy Meeting Mobilizes RF Multiferroics Community
Outcome/Accomplishment
The Center for Translational Applications of Nanoscale Multiferroic Systems (TANMS) – a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) – hosted the first meeting of the entire radio frequency (RF) multiferroics community as part of its sixth annual research strategy meeting (ARSM). Held January 28-29, 2020 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where the TANMS ERC is based, the event gathered experts from government funding agencies, national research labs, academia, and industry to explore the latest research advances in electromagnetic nanomotors and other multiferroic technologies developed at the Center.
Impact/Benefits
The TANMS ERC uses its ARSM event as an opportunity to jointly strategize the commercial emergence of its research-based innovations. The Center's 2020 meeting gathered critical stakeholders in the RF multiferroics community to better identify research priorities and seek joint funding of emerging electromagnetic nanomotor solutions through research grant opportunities. Sessions at the event introduced industry members to joint research opportunities for Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) funding and also discussed broad agency announcements (BAA) in agile efficient electronics and electronic tunable filters. A recurring theme for several discussions focused on Underwater and Implant Applications. As a direct result of this meeting, TANMS Center Director, Professor Greg Carman, organized a committee of leading experts in the field to propose a potential topic for the Department of DefenseMultidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program.
Explanation/Background
The TANMS 2020 ARSM meeting provided stakeholders in the RF multiferroics community with educational and research advance-based sessions addressing: physical design principles; advanced multiscale modeling techniques; leading multiferroic materials development; and breakthroughs in device testing concepts. Talks featured TANMS faculty and students from UCLA, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Virginia Tech University (VTU), Northeastern University (NU), and Oregon State University (OSU). Highlighted speakers from industry included James Bickford, Draper Laboratory; Peter Finkel, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory; Aaron Tremaine, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory; and Randy Kubana, HRL Laboratories.
TANMS students also offered live multiferroic device demonstrations. A listing of all event sessions is available online in the TANMS-ERC 2020 ARSM Program and 2020 ARSM Poster Presentations. The TANMS ARSM event site hosts additional resources to support current and future industry collaborations based on this annual gathering.
