Summer Program SURE to Inspire Young Students

Outcome/Accomplishment

Undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds participated in 10 weeks of research and professional development in a program sponsored by the Center for Smart Streetscapes (NSF CS3), a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) based at Columbia University.

Impact/Benefits

Four years of the Center’s “Summer Undergraduate Research Experience” (SURE) program have inspired dozens of students from across the United States to consider joining STEM fields. The program gives students from historically marginalized populations the opportunity to conduct research with experts in the field and advance their future contributions to engineering.

Explanation/Background

In addition to gaining hands-on research experience, SURE fellows also joined workshops on how to prepare graduate school and undergraduate fellowship applications and participated in industry visits and panel discussions with a number of companies. Fellows were mentored by Columbia faculty, researchers, and graduate students, as well as other academic and industry professionals. The program provided a unique opportunity to understand how to bridge university research and industry work.

Since the inception of Columbia’s flagship program, SURE has expanded to four more universities in collaboration with Amazon Science, a leading sponsor: Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California.
